What does the price of the box depend on?

The price of a cardboard packaging includes many different factors. Starting from the basic raw material, which is corrugated board, to mysteriously sounding cutting dies. In the following article, we will try to dispel any doubts by describing the elements that shape the final price of the box.

Properties of corrugated cardboard

Although corrugated cardboard may seem like a remarkably simple component, there are actually many types available. The price of a box is closely tied to the type of corrugated cardboard we decide on. The fundamental difference, which is visible to the naked eye, is the number of layers. In the case of Corrugated cardboard TEK-PAK We have a choice of 3-layer or 5-layer cardboard. The more layers, the more durable and damage-resistant the cardboard is.

However, the selection of the desired cardboard doesn't end there. Depending on the chosen number of layers, we then have to decide on the type of flute. What does this mean? As the name corrugated cardboard suggests, it consists of different types of flutes. For 3-layer corrugated cardboard, TEK-PAK will be E, B, or C flutes. For 5-layer corrugated cardboard, TEK-PAK will be EB or BC flutes.

„Phew,” we've finally made it to the end. No, no, nothing could be further from the truth :). The last element, extremely important in choosing corrugated cardboard and significantly affecting the final price of the box, is its weight. In this case, the values range from 300 g/m2 to 1400 g/m2. What is this coefficient actually? It's simply the thickness (or density) of the paper in the cardboard. Similar to the number of flutes, here too, the higher the value, the more durable and slightly heavier the corrugated cardboard is.

IMPORTANT: Depending on the corrugated cardboard properties you choose, the price of the box may vary by as much as over 200%.

Corrugated texture color

Besides the technical data of corrugated board, the color of the raw material also affects the final price of the box. In this case, three types of board should be distinguished:

gray texture,

- single-sided bleached cardboard,

- double-sided bleached cardboard.

In most cases, the price of double-sided bleached cardboard is more expensive than single-sided bleached cardboard. However, gray cardboard is generally the cheapest. It's worth remembering that this pattern doesn't have to be a rule at all. Cardboard packaging manufacturers they stock up on necessary materials at different times of the year and from various companies, often storing the materials in their warehouses for many weeks. Therefore, the price of cardboard can vary significantly, especially considering the dynamically changing prices and high inflation of current times. For this reason, the most advantageous solution is Contact with the given company to establish an individual quote. It may happen that bleached cardboard turns out to be cheaper than gray cardboard at a given moment.

Box size and number of operations

When it comes to box prices, size really matters! There's a significant difference in price between a small carton for small items and a large pallet packaging for oversized items. However, the matter isn't as straightforward as it might seem at first glance. The key issue in the final valuation of the box is number of operations (and their degree of complexity), which must be undertaken to produce the packaging.

A simple die-cut box that doesn't require gluing or printing will definitely have a lower price than a printed box that is multi-point glued and sealed with tape. The fewer operations and the simpler the box, the lower the product price will be. In most situations, the most economical solution is Flap boxes.

It's important to remember that if a die-cutter is needed, its cost can vary. The price depends on the number and size of the blades used to create the cutting die. Additionally, the type of die-cutter also determines the cost. Using a flatbed die is a cheaper solution than using a rotary die. This first one is intended for smaller packaging (at TEK-PAK in the 1600 x 1100 mm format, while the latter is for larger boxes. Importantly, the costs of TEK-PAK polymers and dies are a one-time expense and remain at the customer's disposal.

Emphasis and quantity of packaging

The price of a box largely depends on the type of print and the quantity of boxes in the order. Due to the need for proper machine setup, these two factors are closely related. Price for minimum order value in case of TEK-PAK company this is approximately 500 units) It could be as much as 200% higher than the cost of purchasing 10,000 of the same boxes.

The price is determined by several different factors, i.e.:

- the number of colors used,

print area,

-color type (standard/non-standard*).
